Many commentators agree that the astonishing Uaxuctum uaxuctm Scelsi ‘s masterpiece. The title refers to a legend of a Mayan city that mysteriously disappeared in the ninth century.
This certainly is food for the imagination, but focusing too much on it can detract from the splendor of Scelsi ‘s fully musical accomplishment. It might be better, in fact, if the title was replaced with something like “Music for Chorus and Orchestra,” then it could be considered on its merits without being compelled to go allusion-hunting. Unearthly and immense, Uaxuctum is 20 minutes of the best orchestral music of the last century and it needs no program.
Along with full-sized chorus, the instrumentation is unusual: The rest includes four solo vocalists, ondes martenot perhaps the best and non-corny use of that instrument anywherea sistrum, vibraphone, a igacinto of clarinets, a battalion of brass, and a wide range of percussion requiring at least seven players. The latter features a big oil can rubbed along its side and a huge aluminum thunder-sheet.
All these sounds are used with the most refined sense of instrumental colors, particularly with an aptness for blending them to create unique, surreal soundscapes that are mountainous, planetary, galactic.
His chorus, uasuctum into 12 parts, uses a range of extended vocal techniques as varied and demanding as those found in the song cycle Canti del Capricorno — trills, tremolos, microtonal oscillations, nasal sounds, breathing noises — but often they are giwcinto inherently quiet sounds that the legion of ghostly voices becomes a diffuse sonic envelope in which the other sounds are enfolded, a kind of populated silence.
If, like another great orchestral colorist Hector BerliozScelsi occasionally stumbles in his music with unconvincing, banal gestures, in Uaxuctum he never falters.
Every moment is a jewel of dreamlike strangeness and imaginative originality. Anyone with a taste for the dark stuff of poetry — the feeling that each sensation is the tip of an iceberg of significance — will be moved by Uaxuctum.
When it was premiered in OctoberScelsi was 83 years old, no longer composing and less than a year graveside.
Uaxuctum, for ondes martenot, chorus, 8 percussionists & 23 musicians
What an experience it must have been for the lonely man to hear his greatest work unlocked performed after it had been frozen unperformed for 21 years.
