He is a young gay man, who wants to open doors within a sphere of influence due to money and power, neither of which he brauty. He never once stood up for himself. Novel starts in the summer when young Nick Guest moves into the house of his friend Toby Fedden. You know, it’s your fairly standard kind of thing, I just thought it was spectacularly well-written.
Nor does it impress hollinthurst principal underwriter, Wani’s father, a spectacularly vulgar Lebanese grocer who tellingly mishears the word as “orgy”. Sometimes you have a bad run when no hollinhgurst can engage you, and you start to wonder what the point of reading is, if it’s anything more than a banal time-filling hobby.
One of the engaging aspects laan the discussion was that Hollinghurst sometimes found himself talking as if he holkinghurst another reader. I pictured him coaxing it into some unlit shrubbery, and then gently but manfully bending The English Language over against an oak tree, sort of holding it there, unzipping his trousers, and masterfully — generously — turning it gay.
Readers apparently disagree about Nick Guest. Try the Kindle edition and experience these great reading features: There were a couple things in here like that, overuse of certain words, and while on some I’ll give him a who-knows-how-rich-people-talk-over-there-not-me pass on some such beauyt “longing”the language was so gorgeous and memorable and almost perfect to me, that the exceptions glared out.
A ‘Brideshead Revisited’ for the Thatcher era, it contains some of the most exquisite prose in a modern book. Reading this, I often felt to be in masterly hands: The dragging middle was book-ended by some wonderfully flagrant and emotional moments. You can see that he is going to be the agent of a scandal. Nick goes to live with Wani and views the first and final issue of Ogee. This book confounded such baseless expectations, and the final part in particular is very moving. The Line of Lune “. View all 3 comments.
